Cougars fall to Pirates; will face Mustangs and Knights at home
From our weekly issue dated January 27, 2010
A scoring surge by the Hults brothers was not enough to help the Illinois Valley High School boys varsity basketball team from losing 75-62 at Phoenix High School on Thursday, Jan. 21.
Junior Roger Hults scored 21 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. His brother, sophomore Fred Hults, scored 14 points, pulled down 8 rebounds and racked up 7 assists.
On Friday, Jan. 29, the Cougars are set to host the Hidden Valley Mustangs in Ken Mann Memorial Gym. During a previous matchup, I.V. lost by 13 points.
Coach Jeff Winters said that his squad might utilize a zone defense strategy against Hidden Valley.
“The key is going to be defense,“ he said. “We need to play good defense, rebound and take care of the basketball.“
North Valley will face the Cougars in Cave Junction on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
“That“s a game we need to win,“ Winters said.
The last time the Cougars faced the Knights, Illinois Valley was down by 21-17 at the end of the first half. NV scored 46 points in the second half, a scenario that Winters would like to avoid repeating.
“We need to play four quarters and not two,“ Winters said.
