The Illinois Valley High School girls“ basketball team suffered a pair of lopsided losses in Cave Junction last week.
On Tuesday, Jan. 12, the Cougars hosted Hidden Valley at home in Ken Mann Memorial Gym and lost 52-12.
At the end of the first half, the Mustangs held a 21-9 lead.
“The first half against Hidden Valley was the best half we“ve put together all year, by far,“ coach Steve Marsden said. “But the second half, we just couldn“t get it going.“
Junior Laurissa Tausaga scored 8 points and sophomore Carly Jensen scored 4.
Hidden Valley holds the top spot in the Skyline Conference.
“They“ve run through all their opponents,“ Marsden said. “They“ve beaten everybody so far.“
North Valley High School visited Cave Junction on Friday, Jan. 15 for the Cougars“ next game. The Knights came away with a 66-15 win.
“We had too many turnovers and didn“t run our offense well,“ Marsden said. “It was the total opposite of the Hidden Valley game.“
Tausaga scored 6 points and junior Kayla Johnson scored 3. Sophomore Megan Householder, Jensen and senior Beckah Kaberline scored 2 points apiece.
Up next for the Cougars is a game at Phoenix High School on Thursday, Jan. 21.
“Phoenix is always a tough place to win,“ Marsden said. “It will all depend on if we can take care of the ball. If we can take care of the ball, we will be in the game. If we turn the ball over, we“ll be in trouble.“
The team also will host Eagle Point High School in a non-league game on Monday, Jan. 25 and Henley the following day.
Marsden said his squad will be focused on running its offense.
“We have to be patient and can“t turn the ball over,“ he said. “We have to be patient on our shots. That“s something that has to be learned.“
