ROCK ON - Rare rocks and minerals from the recently closed Oregon Dept. of Geology and Minerals Industries (DOGAMI) field office in Grants Pass are now on display at the Josephine County Courthouse. Cases line the basement hallway of the courthouse featuring gold and silver ore samples, meteorites, crystals, stones and gems. The specimens are on loan, said DOGAMI, through the combined efforts of state geologist Vicki McConnell and Josephine County Commissioner Dave Toler. “The placement of the rock and gem displays in the Josephine County Courthouse and the retention of geologic records in our surveyor“s office has been a wonderful achievement for the citizens of Josephine County,“ said Commissioner Toler. There will be a dedication event on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 9 a.m. at the courthouse, 500 N.W. 6th St. in Grants Pass.
COUNTY CONFABS - The Illinois Valley Airport Advisory Board will meet on Monday, Jan. 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the restaurant building at the I.V. Airport. Josephine County Board of Commissioners“ quarterly meeting with Cave Junction officials and constituents in Illinois Valley, scheduled for Jan. 25 has been canceled. No information about rescheduling the meeting was provided.
ART SMART - IVHS students of art teacher Elaine Barker have published a calendar featuring scratch-board images. The decorative calendar is available for sale in Cave Junction at Cabin Chemistry, Bear Images and the Illinois Valley Visitor Center.
FOOD FOLKS - Valley Bluegrass favorite Eastfork will perform a concert on Sunday, Jan. 31 to benefit the LifeLines Ministry, Selma Open Door and Cave Junction Cares. The performance will be held at the Illinois Valley Grange Hall, 3763 Holland Loop, beginning at 3 p.m. Donations of cash and food are welcome.
NOTEPAD - Second trimester conferences will be held at Lorna Byrne Middle School on Wednesday, Jan. 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.. Open arena conferencing will be held in the cafeteria. Phone the office with questions: (541) 592-2163 ... Forest Edge Farm, maker of hand-felted llama felt hats, will hold three small hat making workshops on Thursday and Saturdays during January and February, (the exact dates will be determined by participants). Slots will be filled on a first come, first served basis. At the end of the day-long workshop, students will have a completed hat. There is a fee for the workshop.
