I.V. grapplers fall short

From our weekly issue dated January 06, 2010

A pair of recent tournaments found the Illinois Valley High School varsity wrestling team struggling to find its footing.

The squad first hit the road for the Reno-Sierra Nevada Classic, which began on Monday, Dec. 28. Approximately 97 teams participated, and came from as far as Montana, Idaho and Washington.

IVHS placed 32nd among the bunch. Cougar sophomore Jesse Orndoff placed 4th in the 112-pound division. No other IVHS grapplers placed at that tournament.

“We were hoping to be in the top 20, but that didn“t work out for us,“ said coach Jay Miller. “We thought we“d do better. That was our poorest showing to date down there.“

Orndoff had a stronger showing at the Willamette Invitational, which began on Saturday, Jan. 2. A total of 18 teams participated, and IVHS placed 6th.

Orndoff won his division; senior Brandon Parker placed 4th in the 103-pound class; junior Zack Anderson was 3rd among 135-pounders; freshman Gabe Miller took 3rd in the 125-pound division; and junior Matt Coultas placed 5th at 152 pounds.

Up next for the IVHS grapplers is the Oregon Wrestling Classic on Friday, Jan. 8 in Redmond. That tournament is by invitation only, with the top teams from each district set to compete.
