Girls B-Ball team wins in Glendale

From our weekly issue dated January 06, 2010

For the first time in recent memory, the Illinois Valley High School girls varsity basketball team won a game.

The victory came during a tournament in Glendale on Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 29 and 30.

For their first game there, the Cougars lost to Powers 46-39. IVHS had the game tied at 27 at the end of the third quarter and were ahead 30-27 for part of the fourth.

However, Powers made a series of foul shots, which made all the difference. Despite that, coach Steve Marsden applauded his team“s effort.

“I“m really proud of the way they played,“ he said.

Junior Laurissa Tausaga scored 13 points, and junior Kayla Johnson scored 12.

On Dec. 30, IVHS played Siletz Valley, a team from Oregon“s north coast, and won 46-27.

Tausaga scored 20 points in that contest, and was named to the all-tournament team. Sophomore Carly Jensen came up with 8 points and 10 rebounds.

“She really came up big for us,“ Marsden said. “It was a real turn-around game for her.“

Marsden attributed the win to improved shooting from his squad, and said it already has improved morale.

“It was a huge weight off their shoulders,“ he said. “Getting that win helps.“

IVHS is set to travel to Henley High School for a Friday, Jan. 8 game.
