JCSO cuts jail mail costs
From our weekly issue dated December 30, 2009
New cost-saving measures for the county jail in Grants Pass have been announced by the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO).
JCSO on Tuesday, Jan. 22 announced plans to implement a new procedure for handling inmate mail. Deputies currently spend much time dealing with mail, but by streamlining the workload, JCSO said it can reduce costs by an estimated $25,000 annually.
JCSO said that it plans to limit incoming and outgoing inmate mail, with the exception of legal and official correspondence, to postcards only. That move is intended to greatly increase efficiencies and safety by minimizing contraband while still maintaining inmates’ rights, JCSO announced.
Similar policies have been implemented this year at jails in Missouri, Kansas, Florida, Arizona and Marion County in Oregon, according to JCSO.
