From our weekly issue dated December 16, 2009
Illinois Valley High School junior Kayla Johnson racked up a plethora of points in a series of losses experienced by the Cougars.
On Tuesday, Dec. 8, the girls varsity basketball squad traveled to St. Mary’s School in Medford. Johnson scored 4 points as the team lost, 49-10.
Coach Steve Marsden said that the team held St. Mary’s to 8 points in the second and third quarters.
“It was just the first quarter and the last quarter that got away from us,” he said.
The team traveled to Brookings Harbor High School for a tournament on Friday, Dec. 11. That night, the team lost to Myrtle Point, 72-16.
“We had a hard time stopping those guys,” Marsden said.
Johnson scored 11 points in that game.

On Saturday, Dec. 12, IVHS fell to Bandon, 62-36. Johnson had 13 points. Marsden said that a slow start contributed to the loss.
“We played them even except for the first quarter,” Marsden said. “That’s what really got us.”
A tournament in Bandon is slated for the IVHS girls hoopsters on Thursday, Dec. 17. The team is set to play its first game against Sheridan High School.
