MOVIE SPORTS - The Illinois Valley Booster Club will host its second annual Holiday Movie Night at I.V. High School on Friday, Dec. 11. The doors will open at 5 p.m., and the first movie will begin at 6 p.m. How the Grinch Stole Christmas and Elf are the featured films. Santa will visit at intermission, and refreshments will be available for purchase. All proceeds will benefit the spring sports athletes.
HOLIDAY RAIL - Visit Kerbyville Museum and view its annual Christmas model railroad train display. The museum will be open on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the exhibit will be part of the Evening of Art & Wine in Kerby. There will be free museum admission for each person with two cans of food, which will be donated to Illinois Valley Family Coalition.
IN THE SING - Illinois Valley High School band and choir will perform a Winter Concert on Thursday, Dec. 17, beginning at 7 p.m. In conjunction with the concert, IVHS Interact Club will hold a holiday bazaar beginning at 5 p.m. featuring a number of vendors, and some bargain items.
DONOR DAY - The American Red Cross has scheduled a blood drive at Illinois Valley Senior Center, 520 E. River St. in Cave Junction, on Thursday, Dec. 17. Phone (800) 448-3543 to schedule an appointment or to ask about making a donation.
BOOK BARGAINS - The Bookstore at the Illinois Valley Branch of Josephine Community Library Inc. is open with hardcover and paperback books for sale. All proceeds will help to purchase books and other materials for the branch. Phone 592-4778. Regular hours are Wednesdays and Fridays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m. The library is at 209 W. Palmer St. in Cave Junction, just down the street from Carlos’ Mexican Restaurante.
COUGAR GIFTS - Donations are sought for the annual Christmas shoe box drive for Illinois Valley High School students in need. Fill a shoe box with unwrapped boy or girl gifts and deliver them to IVHS or phone Heather Merrill at 592-2116, and she will pick them up. Deadline is Wednesday, Dec. 9. Among suggested items: jewelry, makeup, perfume, socks and school supplies for girls; and for boys, a wallet, aftershave, socks, watch, hat, or school supplies. Also accepted are cash donations, which are used to shop for items to fill even more shoe boxes. More than 80 students received gift boxes last year.
SICK PRICKS - Josephine County Public Health Dept. will hold a free, H1N1 vaccination clinic on Thursday, Dec. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the department office at 715 Dimmick St. in Grants Pass. Although there is no charge for the shot, attendees should bring an insurance card if available. The clinic is for H1N1 influenza vaccine only; no seasonal vaccine will be available Dec. 17.
NOTEPAD - Fund-raising has begun for the 2010 Safe & Sober All-Night Grad Party. On Wednesday, Dec. 9 the bands Jefferson and East Fork will play at Illinois Valley High School beginning at 6 p.m. Proceeds from ticket and concession sales will help fund the yearly party for graduates ... Dialing a local phone call will require a 10-digit number as of Jan. 10, 2010, said Frontier Communications. This is due to an “Area Code Overlay” or addition of a new Oregon area code “to ensure a continuing supply of phone numbers.” New phone numbers issued in the 541 area as of Feb. 10, 2010 will be assigned the new 458 area code ... Josephine County Animal Shelter is seeking donations for the dogs, cats and other critters at the shelter. Needed items include toys and food for dogs and cats; blankets and towels, cat litter, and treats. The shelter also needs a horse trailer and cash for veterinary bills and other health needs. Donations can be left at the shelter, 1420 Brookside Blvd. in Merlin, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays ... ’Til Death do Us Part, a murder-mystery dinner theater production, will be performed on Jan. 23 at Selma Community Center.
