SEASON LIGHTS - All in the community are welcome to attend the Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce annual Christmas tree-lighting and sing-along on Saturday, Dec. 5 on the Junction Inn parking lot beginning at 5 p.m. The chamber will provide hot chocolate and cookies, and Santa will have candy canes for the kids. Remember: 5 p.m.
HANDCRAFTED HOLIDAYS - Dome School at 9367 Takilma Road will hold its annual Winter Bazaar on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 5 and 6, beginning at 10 a.m. Scores of handmade items, live entertainment, children’s activities, food and beverages, and a raffle are among offerings. YULETIDE RR - Visit Kerbyville Museum and view its annual Christmas model railroad train display. The museum will be open on Saturdays, Dec. 5 and 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. And on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. the exhibit will be part of the Evening of Art & Wine in Kerby. There will be free museum admission for each person with two cans of food, which will be donated to Illinois Valley Family Coalition.
‘CHRISTMAS CAROL’ - Titled, A Commedia Christmas Carol, an adaptation of Dickens' classic holiday tale, Dell’Arte Company will present its 29th annual holiday show. The free performance, with a rambunctious commedia dell'arte style with masks, magic and music, will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Lorna Byrne Middle School on N. Junction Avenue in Cave Junction.
GOOD SHOTS - Josephine County Public Health Dept. will hold a free, H1N1 vaccination clinic on Tuesday, Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Josephine County Bldg., 101 S. Redwood Hwy. in Downtown CJ. Although there is no charge for the shot, attendees should bring an insurance card if available. The clinic is for H1N1 influenza vaccine only; no seasonal vaccine will be available Dec. 8.
GATHERING GIFT BOXES - Donations are sought for the annual Christmas shoe box drive for Illinois Valley High School students in need. Fill a shoe box with unwrapped boy or girl gifts and deliver them to IVHS or phone Heather Merrill at 592-2116, and she will pick them up. Deadline is Wednesday, Dec. 9. Among suggested items are jewelry, makeup, perfume, socks and school supplies for girls; and for boys, a wallet, aftershave, socks, watch, hat, or school supplies. Also accepted are cash donations, which are used to shop for items to fill even more shoe boxes. More than 80 students received gift boxes last year.
HOLIDAY HELPERS - Since 1989 the Cave Junction Cares Program has served breakfast to needy individuals and families in Illinois Valley on Christmas morning in the Jubilee Park pavilion. And meals are provided for the homebound, plus Santa has gifts for children. The program is made possible entirely through donations and the work of volunteers. NOTEPAD - Pearl Harbor Day will be observed with a ceremony on Monday, Dec. 7 at Cave Junction City Hall beginning around 9:45 a.m. Members of Glenn Morrison American Legion Post 70 will participate, as well as Post 70 Auxiliary members, said Bob Soria, post commander. ...The Bridgeview Community Church annual community Christmas dinner program served some 200 meals last year, while also providing gifts for children, free blankets and clothing. Planning and fund-raising for the event is under way, and the group is collecting hats, jackets, scarves, gloves, sleeping bags and items for hygiene bags. SOFCU Community Credit Union customers helped that institution donate $1,000 to the Salvation Army’s Thanksgiving Turkey Dinner program through the purchase of Turkey Bucks ... Throughout December, JCLI volunteers will staff a holiday gift-wrapping booth in the lobby at Evergreen Federal Bank in Grants Pass. Evergreen is providing all the wrapping materials, and the cost is by donation. Gift-wrapping will take place on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Dec. 21 ... ’Til Death do Us Part, a murder-mystery dinner theater production, will be performed on Jan. 23 at Selma Community Center.
