COLLEGE CASH - Illinois Valley High School will host a meeting about college financial aid on Wednesday, Dec. 2 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Information about how to apply for federal and state financial aid and scholarships will be provided. Parents of high school seniors are strongly encouraged to attend. The event also is open to other parents and community members interested in learning about the financial aid process.

SANTA SIGHTING? - All are welcome to attend the Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce annual Christmas tree lighting and sing-along on Saturday, Dec. 5 on the Junction Inn parking lot beginning at 5 p.m. The chamber will provide hot chocolate and cookies, and Santa will be on hand with candy canes for the kids. Remember: 5 p.m.

DICKENS DELL’ARTE - Dell’Arte Company will present its 29th annual holiday show, A Commedia Christmas Carol, an adaptation of Dickens' classic holiday tale, in a rambunctious commedia dell'arte style with masks, magic and music. The free performance will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Lorna Byrne Middle School on N. Junction Avenue.

SICK NICKS - Josephine County Public Health Dept. will hold a free, H1N1 vaccination clinic on Tuesday, Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Josephine County Bldg., 101 S. Redwood Hwy. in Downtown CJ. The clinic is for H1N1 influenza vaccine only; no seasonal vaccine will be available at that time. There is no charge for the shot, but attendees should bring an insurance card if available.

GATHERING GIFT BOXES - Donations are sought for the annual Christmas shoe box drive for Illinois Valley High School students in need. Fill a shoe box with unwrapped boy or girl gifts and deliver them to IVHS or phone Heather Merrill at 592-2116 and she will pick them up. Deadline is Wednesday, Dec. 9. Among suggested items are jewelry, makeup, perfume, socks and school supplies for girls and for boys, a wallet, aftershave, socks, watch, hat, or school supplies. Also accepted are cash donations, which are used to shop for items to fill even more shoe boxes. More than 80 students received gift boxes last year.

NOTEPAD - IVHS teacher Jaime Szijjarto has posted a project material request with the online education donation clearinghouse DonorsChoose.org. The project, “Illinois Valley Lives,” will provide writing resources and experience for 85 students through interviews with area senior citizens and creation of nonfiction accounts of their lives. Donations can be made to this and other projects on DonorsChoose.org ... The yuletide season will kick off during a Grants Pass “First Friday Art Night” on Dec. 4. In conjunction, the Grants Pass Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will hold its annual Crèche Festival. Participants will display Nativity scenes from around the world. The festival will be displayed in the cultural hall of the Grants Pass LDS Stake Center, at 1969 Williams Hwy. The event is free and open to the public from 5 to 9 p.m. The program will include live music and refreshments ... Throughout December, Josephine Community Libraries Inc. volunteers will be staffing a holiday gift-wrapping booth in the lobby at Evergreen Federal Bank in Grants Pass. Evergreen is providing all the wrapping materials, and the cost is by donation. Gift wrapping will take place on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., ending Dec. 21 ... The deadline for businesses to enter the Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce annual Christmas decorating contest is Tuesday, Dec. 1. Judges will visit participating locations on Saturday, Dec. 5.
