Attractions abundant at pre-holiday Art Walk

Second Friday ArtWalk will usher in the holiday season with Friday the 13th live music, dance and artistic displays all over Cave Junction.

At the Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance site, next to the DMV office, “gifts for home and hostess” by Joyce Hugo and Susie Ellwood will be featured. These hand-stitched treasures include aprons, potholders and decorations made from vintage and gently used materials. 

From 6 to 6:30 p.m., JoAnne Stone, licensed acupuncturist, will offer “Nutrition Tips for Winter” to help boost immunity and reduce stress. Learn ancient techniques to heal illness and increase energy.

Across the street, Debbie Wilson, “ArtWalk Featured Artist,” will display original paintings, jewelry and sculpture at Northwest Hairlines.  And guests can enjoy original music by Wally Aiken of Two Foot Daddy, whose new CD, Irish I was Dutch, will be available. There will be wine-tasting courtesy of Bridgeview Vineyards Winery.

A few steps north, ArtWalk will welcome the reopening celebration of the I.V. Branch Library under Josephine Community Libraries Inc. Claudia Smith Anderson, “ArtWalk Featured Author,” will read and sign her new book, Colts and Caves, on the half-hour while the ever-lively I.V. String Band will provide its signature 21st century Back Porch Music” at corresponding intervals. 

Guests are encouraged to join the library to help support operation of this free-to-the-public institution. Sea and landscape paintings by Kate Prockl, and paintings of the Oregon Caves by Hester Mallonee, Oregon Caves National Monument artist-in-residence, will be displayed throughout the month.

On Redwood Hwy., ArtWalk will welcome Divine Books, formerly Abiding in the Vine. Owner Kathryn Wilson invites visitors to meet artist Leann Steers and view her “spirit-inspired” 12-by-8-foot mural-in-progress; and to sample organic goodies, bakery treats, coffees and teas which will be available at her cozy soon-to-be-open café.

Across Redwood Hwy., Nacho Mama’s Cantina will celebrate Cuban culture with free drawings, special cuisine, cigars and acoustic guitar playing by Rosie Barty. 

Patrons also can attend the grand opening of Mama’s Social Club from 8 p.m. to midnight.  The new entertainment location will operate throughout the winter months.  Minors will be prohibited from this after-hours private club.

Learn to tap dance in 15 minutes under the tutelage of Suzanne Hamilton at either 6:15 or 7:15 p.m. at the Josephine County Bldg.  Students are asked to wear leather-soled shoes or dance in their socks for this fun exercise.

At 6:30 p.m. students from Stillpoint Dance Studio will perform selections from their coming production of the Nutcracker Ballet. 

Student art, including works by Elaine Barker’s I.V. High School art class, will be displayed. These interesting relief prints, or collographs, were developed from texture-board collages assembled by Project Headstart students.

Other work will include Nature and animal photography by Latasha Smarr; and Illinois River Valley Art Council’s (IRVAC) Learning Through Art projects from Lorna Byrne Middle School students led by Noralene Harland and Kristen Whicheloe.

Valley newcomer Jackie Henry-Ross will play classical and Spanish guitar music at Home Valley Bank from 4 to 6 p.m. only.

At Taylor’s Country Store, B. Wishes will play and sing her thought-provoking original music. Rebecca Pearson will display her “Wish Upon a Star” collaged ornaments, and Roger Robinson will present new watercolors at Taylor’s Art Wall.

Illinois Valley Visitor Center will celebrate “Clayfolk” Andrea Brinkman and Gwen Childs. Andrea will display new decorative and functional ceramic pieces including a stoneware and stained glass sculpture of an elf cradling a lamp. Gwen Childs’ work also ranges from playful to practical, including her signature ceramic birds and pottery pieces. Visitors also will have the opportunity to sample locally produced Biscuit Mountain Jam and other refreshments.

Also on Caves Hwy., the Eye Care Group, Optometric Physicians, will display work by two women artists now through the end of the year during business hours. 

Sue Lily’s handmade Oregon polymer bead bracelets, necklaces and earrings are light, charming and colorful.  Kay Ekwall’s new show, “The Nature of Things,” features one-of-a-kind photographs and paintings.

Subway Restaurant will feature Caleb Orton playing acoustic guitar and singing from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  At 8, Sunshine and the Pyro-Gyro Fire Dancers will perform their death-defying contortions at the south side of the building as a grand finale to the Cave Junction 2009 ArtWalk season.
