Wildfire preparation plan topic at O’Brien meeting
From our weekly issue dated November 04, 2009
Illinois Valley Fire District (IVFD) announced that members of the O’Brien community can attend an informational meeting to discuss a fire plan on Friday, Nov. 6.
The gathering will be held at the O’Brien Fire Station on Lone Mountain Road across from O’Brien Country Store, at 6 p.m. Refreshments and information will be provided, or contact IVFD at 592-2225 for financial or informational support.
As some might be aware, IVFD has been implementing a communitywide fire plan in collaboration with the Illinois Valley Community Development Organization and Josephine County Integrated Fire Plan partners.
Their goal is to help property owners become more prepared in case of a wildfire in order to reduce the risks to their properties, homes, families and firefighters who might be called on to protect any of those.
The area south of Cave Junction has been selected to benefit from a National Fire Plan grant-funded project. The project may help pay for defensible space around a home, fuels reduction on the rest of the property, and/or thinning along roads and driveways to make them safe for evacuation and for emergency support vehicles in the unfortunate event of a wildfire. Participation in the program is entirely voluntary.
IVFD said that it appreciates those of you who have already begun or completed defensible space around dwelling areas.
