Based on the competition, the annual Powder Puff flag football game for Illinois Valley High School homecoming could be called the “Power” Puff contest.
On Wednesday, Oct. 28 the senior/freshmen (Sr./Fr.) team took on the junior/sophomore (Jr./So.) squad. Sr./Fr. took first blood when Hailee Parker bolted around the right side for a 59-yard TD run. The 2-point conversion failed when Heidi Unger yanked flag to stop the score.
The girls played hard and mixed it up with some vicious hitting from Laurissa Tausaga, who was a chip off her brother Lance’s block. The score was 6-0 Jr./So. at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter the Sr./Fr. team had a terrific goal line stand to stop the Jr./So. drive. Alex Miller scored to make it 12-0 for Jr./So., as Kianna “Klicki” Alveraz stopped the 2-point conversion attempt.
Kayla Johnson scored on a 65-yard TD run in which the Cougar track star showed her stuff and outran everybody to the goal, to take a 20-0 lead in the third quarter. A pass from Miller to Johnson made the 2-point conversion.
The fourth belonged to the Sr./Fr., but was a bit too late. Rebekah Kaberline, not to be outdone by Johnson, showed her track prowess and rambled for a 44-yard TD run. The 2-point conversion failed, making the score 20-6 Jr./So. The Sr./Fr. then tried an onside kick and was successful with the recovery.
It didn’t take long for the Sr./Fr. to score when Kaberline scored again on a 45-yard TD run, with Paige Ragsdale converting the 2-point conversion. Final score: Jr./So. 20 to Sr./Fr. 14.
