Efforts under way to preserve park
From our weekly issue dated October 28, 2009
Immediately adjacent to the RCC Kerby Belt Bldg. is a small piece of property of great significance to students of the former Kerby Union High School (KUHS).
Efforts to convert the parcel to a public park have met with unanticipated complications, but a new group is forming to bring that concept to fruition.
Members of the KUHS Alumni Association had worked to mitigate the issues surrounding the property, including lack of access to water, the need for liability insurance coverage and basic maintenance. However, that group disbanded on July 31, as many of its members are elderly and facing health problems.
But stepping up to take its place is the Kerby Unified High School Commemorative Park Association.
The association is forming an advisory board and working with an attorney to draw up bylaws and articles of incorporation. It is seeking members for the advisory board, as well as financial support, in-kind donations and volunteer labor to establish and maintain the park.
Immediate plans are to convene the board, approve documents and elect officers. Once the association has been formalized, a bank account can be opened in its name, and liability insurance coverage can be generated.
It is hoped that a formal proposal can be made to the Josephine County Board of Commissioners regarding the park property sometime in November.
An Oct. 30 deadline has been set for persons hoping to join the association.
