From our weekly issue dated October 28, 2009
The Lorna Byrne Middle School Vikings, led by fifth-year head coach Todd Yohan, won their fourth game of the season at home against South Middle School 28-20.
The game was exciting from start to finish.
Logan Miller connected with Shay Mathers in the first quarter for a 16-yard TD pass, and the Vikings converted the 2-point conversion to take the lead 8-0. Eric Householder’s 5-yard TD run in the second quarter made the score 14-0.
But the Vikings shot themselves in the foot, when they fumbled the ball with 37 seconds left in the first half and the Spartans scooped it up to score: Lorna Byrne ahead 14-6 at the half.
South scored in the third quarter to tie the game at 14 all. In the fourth, the Viks scored first to make it 20-14. The Spartans responded with a score of their own to tie the game again at 20.
With 24 seconds left in the game, Chase Robbins hit Householder for a game-winning TD pass. Josh Allan caught the 2-point conversion to end the game Vikings 28 – Spartans 20.
“I think this team came together today,” said Yohan. “We really had to play the entire game to get this one. I’m proud of this team this year.”
The Viks won their final game against Talent in Talent, 38-8, to finish the season with a winning record at 5 wins, two losses and one tie. With continued success at Lorna Byrne, the future looks good for the soon-to-be Cougars.
