Crusaders, Knights outscore Cougs 16

From our weekly issue dated October 28, 2009

The Cougars girls soccer played its best first half of the year against Cascade Christian at U.S. Cellular Field in Medford on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

Apparently the Illinois Valley players liked the Astroturf field because they held the Crusaders scoreless for the first 23 minutes and only gave up one more goal in the remaining 19 minutes of the first half, to be behind 2-0.

“The entire team played amazing in the first half and just didn’t have enough to finish the game,” said coach Roz Brown. “They all played with determination the entire game. I am so proud of them.”

Cascade Christian scored 4 goals in the second half to win 6-0.

“Kieran Rose, Kristen Vidales, Xenia Velasco and Carrie Snyder all played their best soccer of the year, way above my expectations,” added Brown. Velasco had 21 saves for the Cougars.

Once again. I.V. played short-handed with 10 players because of injuries Saturday, Oct. 24 in Cave Junction against North Valley. The Knights took advantage of many 2-on-1 plays to score 5 times in the first half and 3 in the second half.

Velasco had 20 saves, and Jessyka Smith saved 6-of-8 in-net. The Knights won the match 8-0.

The most exciting and athletic play of the game came when Laurissa Tausaga went high and even higher with the difficult bicycle kick, and sent the ball sailing away from the Cougar goal and into Knight territory.

“Unbelievable!” exclaimed Brown, echoed by assistant coach Annette Skidmore.

“The last few games we have benefited by the consistent good soccer being played by the whole team, especially Tausaga, Velasco, Vidales and Snyder,” proclaimed Brown.
