From our weekly issue dated October 28, 2009

Siskiyou Project ecologist Rich Nawa on Sunday, Nov. 1 and Saturday, Nov. 7 will lead a free hike to view spawning salmon on Illinois River.

Nawa will explain the Chinook salmon life cycle and their habitat needs. Hikers may see as many as 50 salmon spawning or leaping at waterfalls.

The hike will begin with a 1-mile walk on flat ground to see migrating salmon along Illinois River at Forks State Park at 1 p.m. At approximately 2:30 p.m., the group will carpool to Little Falls on Illinois River near Kerby, to hike approximately a half- mile to see leaping salmon.

The trail to Little Falls can be muddy and is rocky near the falls.
