Bend author Kim McCarrel is traveling around Oregon, speaking about her new book, Oregon Trails and Horse Camps, and showing slides from her favorite equine adventures.

She will give a presentation on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Lewis Court (off E. River Street) in Cave Junction. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Oregon Trails and Horse Camps is her second guidebook on trail-riding and horse camping in Oregon. Her 2005 book focused on Central Oregon recreational areas. Since then she has wandered farther afield and now offers useful information on the best horse trails, parks and campsites throughout the state.

McCarrel urges people to explore Oregon on horseback and see it as the pioneers did 150 years ago. Riding her reliable Tennessee Walking Horse, Jane, she enjoys being close to Nature and experiencing the Oregon wilderness area just as early explorers, settlers, hunters and travelers did: on horseback.

Riders may discover the beauty Oregon has to offer, from wild Pacific beaches to the forested mountains of the Cascades and the quiet of the high desert. Whether taking a trail-riding vacation or finding a good network of trails for day-rides, Oregon’s horse camps and equestrian-friendly parks offer top-notch riding trails. Using the guidebook, readers learn where to stay, where to ride, and what to expect.

The book features the Oregon Coast, Willamette Valley, Southern Oregon and Cascade Mountains areas.

McCarrel will answer questions from the audience after her slide presentation. Copies of both trail-riding books will be available.

The program is hosted by Back Country Horsemen of Oregon (BCHO), Sourdough Chapter, and is open to the public. Refreshments will be served, according to Dick Butler, chapter president. Also, a one-night stay and dinner for two at Seven Feathers Hotel and Casino will be raffled as a fund-raiser for the Sourdough Chapter.
