PUSHING YOUR DUCK - Rotary’s “Last Chance” Rogue Duck Derby adoption event will be held in Illinois Valley on Wednesday, Sept. 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Home Valley Bank in Cave Junction. Dog-cart rides for kids are offered free with purchase of a race entry. Based at Riverside Park, the seventh annual Grants Pass Duck Derby will be held on Sept. 26. Numerous prizes include a $15,000 Alaskan fishing trip or a $10,000 home entertainment-and-furniture package; a Southern Oregon get-away package with lodging and meals; a “coffee-a-day” pass for a year from Dutch Bros.; and one-of-a-kind artwork. The fund-raiser has improved athletic fields at high schools in Josephine County, and is presented by Grants Pass Rotary Club Foundation. Duck entry adoption forms are available in Illinois Valley at Bi-Rite Auto Parts, SOFCU Community Credit Union and Home Valley Bank.

FARM FEST - Illinois Valley Food Coalition will hold the first Farm & Garden Festival on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Jubilee Park in Cave Junction. There will be free workshops and demonstrations of bee-keeping, raising chickens, tool repair and more. Food and craft booths, live music and a “local foods contest” will be part of the mix. I.V. GROOVY GRAPES - Grape Stomp 2009, sponsored by Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce, will be held Saturday, Sept. 26 at Bridgeview Vineyards Winery. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments, with grape-stomping tunes by Eastfork, will be featured. Tickets are available at the Chamber of Commerce office (I.V. FLU NEWS - Josephine County Public Health Dept. is offering seasonal influenza vaccinations at its Grants Pass location, 715 N.W. Dimmick St., on Friday, Sept. 25; and Tuesdays, Sept. 29 and Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The fee is $30 for those without Medicare, Oregon Health Plan or BlueCross/BlueShield coverage (bring current insurance card). In Illinois Valley, a flu clinic will be held on Thursday, Oct. 29 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Josephine County Bldg. in Downtown Cave Junction. ‘FORE’ THE KIDS - Boys & Girls Club of Rogue Valley will present its second annual “Golftoberfest” on Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Illinois Valley Golf Course. BLUES CHARITY - Southern Oregon Blues Society will present Women Sing the Blues, a benefit concert for the Women’s Crisis Center on Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Grants Pass Performing Arts Center. Grammy nominees, The Red Hot Blues Sisters, and B Wishes will perform. CHATEAU REUNION - The National Park Service, The Friends of the Oregon Caves & Chateau, and the Chateau at the Oregon Caves will hold the first Reunion Weekend Friday through Sunday, Sept. 25-27. It’s for those who have worked at the Chateau, made beds or served meals, been a cave tour guide or one of many other positions. NOTEPAD - A “spruce-up” day at Lake Selmac is planned by BLM and Josephine County Parks Dept. for Saturday, Sept. 26. Projects will include trail maintenance, noxious weed removal and litter removal. Pacifica’s Mobile Nature & Horticulture Center, The Caterpillar, will be open during the volunteer appreciation luncheon. The walk-through "discovery room" offers hands-on Nature activities for all ages ... A Poker Hike fund-raiser to benefit the Glass Rail Outfit will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3 at the new hiking and equestrian trailhead on Westside Road at the 3-mile marker.
