Mildred M. Gammel

Mildred M. Gammel, 89, of Cave Junction, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009 at an adult foster home.

A graveside service will be at 3 p.m., Monday, Sept. 7, 2009 at Laurel Cemetery with Pastor Charles Chase officiating. Illinois Valley Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.


Charles Wesley Alcorn

A family service will be held for Charles Wesley Alcorn, 95, of Cave Junction, who died Friday, Aug. 14, 2009 at home.

Mr. Alcorn was born Aug. 3, 1914 in Stonington, Colo. In 1936 he moved to Cave Junction, and from 1941 to 1949 he watched for fires from Onion Mountain. In 1949 he moved to Crescent City, Calif. and returned to Cave Junction in the early 1970s. He worked for logging companies on fire watch for several years before his retirement.

He helped the homeless and anyone in need, and enjoyed whittling.

Surviving are a daughter, Margaret Lyon, of O’Brien; four grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Illinois Valley Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.


Howard F. Paul

Howard F. Paul, 86, of Kerby, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009 at home.

A memorial service will be held at Valley Evangelical Free Church in Cave Junction in September. Private interment will be held at Laurel Cemetery.

Mr. Paul was born March 19, 1923 in Kane, Penn., to Roy & Inez Paul. He graduated from Emporium High School in 1940. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army as a machinist, and was honorably discharged in November 1945.

On Aug. 29, 1942 he married Betty, and in 1947 they moved to California. Howard & Betty moved from Inglewood, Calif. to Kerby in 1980. He traveled between California and Oregon until he retired from Aerospace Corp. in 1985. For several years, Howard owned and operated Paul’s Saw Sharpening in Kerby before deciding to fully retire.

He was an active member of Valley Evangelical Free Church, which he helped build.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Paul, of Kerby; five sons: Gary Paul, of Kerby, Robert Paul, of Rockbridge, Mo., Bernard Paul of Norwood, Mo., David Paul, of Kerby, and Timothy Paul, of Murrieta, Calif.; two sisters: Deloris Miller, of Marshville, Okla., and Joyce Levine, of Fresno, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
