Bob's Corner

Seemed like a good idea. Play some volleyball for fun and exercise. At three score and five (my age, and sometimes the lead held by the other team), what was I thinking?
OK, and here’s the whole truth: I had already played one session a week before and come away with some sore muscles and hardwood floor burns on both knees. My only guess is that because the soreness had diminished and the burns had healed, I felt it was time for some new pain and more knee burns.
So off I tottered, ready to leap and block; ready to dig for hard-to-reach shots; ready to set up or, in some cases, to blast the ball over the net single-handedly. Yeah, right. Not gonna’ happen, ese.
Although I was “ready” for some exercise, I got way more than I anticipated. Or deserved? Maybe I did deserve what I got: two brand-new knee burns, one extremely sore right calf muscle; back pain; leg pain; arm pain; finger pain. I had soreness in muscles that I didn’t even know existed.

The awful part is losing consistently to the other team. But what the heck, it’s good to be consistent at something. You know, it seemed as though the team I was on would win a number of times, only to discover that we were not so great at the clutch plays. Plus, one member of the other team is a pro at psyching out the stalwarts on the other side of the net with a patented brand of patter.
And frankly, I found more than once that the net mysteriously got higher, especially when I served.
But playing volleyball was fun, and I did get some exercise. Although it likely will be a long time before I head out for more such enjoyment — unless my shipment of ibuprofen arrives soon.
