Here, There, and Everywhere

From our weekly issue dated August 26, 2009

DANCE EXPO - Dancing, drumming and crafters will be a part of a Native American dance demonstration to be held in conjunction with other sesquicentennial celebration activities at Jubilee Park in Cave Junction on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 29 and 30, at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Contrary to an advertisement published last week in the Noose, which stated that a powwow was to be held, participant Justin Leavitt clarified that his performance is simply a demonstration, without the ceremony of a true powwow. Leavitt said he will perform a few traditional dances, perhaps even the Raven dance, and demonstrate the hand drum.

BAND-WIDTH BENEFIT - Food, dancing and family fun are on tap Saturday, Aug. 29 at the Takilma Community Bldg., 9367 Takilma Road. Live music by Hard Rain and Takilma will be featured. The event is to benefit Hope Mountain Radio, a commercial-free, listener-supported streaming Internet radio presence (listen live at takilmafm.com). There is a sliding-scale admission fee. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

MARCH ON - “It’s not too late,” say organizers, “to apply for the Illinois Valley Lions Labor Day Parade.” Groups, businesses and floats still are welcome. There is no cost to enter. Phone Harry Johnson at 596-2104 for more info.

QUILT CALL - Deadline for entries to the second annual Valley Girls Quilt Show is Saturday, Sept. 19. Entry forms are available at Picket Fence Fabrics, 379 Caves Hwy. across from Siskiyou Market.  The show will be held Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16 and 17 at the Illinois Valley Senior Center. Watch the Noose for more details.

LUCKY DUCKY - The seventh annual Grants Pass Rogue Duck Derby will be held on Sept. 26 based at Riverside Park. Among prizes: a $15,000 Alaskan fishing trip or a $10,000 home entertainment-and-furniture package; a Southern Oregon get-away package featuring lodging and meals; a “coffee-a-day” pass for a year from Dutch Bros.; one-of-a-kind artwork; and much more. The event, which has raised funds to rebuild athletic fields at high schools in Josephine County, is presented by the Grants Pass Rotary Club Foundation. Duck entry adoption forms are available in Illinois Valley at Bi-Rite Auto Parts and Home Valley Bank. Also, there will be remote Duck Derby adoption sites during events throughout August and September.

NOTEPAD - Monday, Aug. 31 is set for classes to begin in Three Rivers School District, a week earlier this school year because of “snow days” last year ... Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 1, open hours at the Grants Pass branch of Josephine County Libraries Inc. will be: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3 to 7 p.m.; Wednesdays and Fridays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m. The library in Grants Pass is at 200 N.W. C St. Phone 476-0571 for more information ... Library volunteers will bag groceries at Shop Smart Food Warehouse in Cave Junction on Saturday, Aug. 29 to raise funds in support of the libraries and to “spread the word” about the Cave Junction site reopening on Saturday, Sept. 5 ... Illinois Valley Lions Club will sponsor its 38th annual Labor Day Parade through Downtown Cave Junction on Monday, Sept. 7. Redwood Hwy. (U.S. Hwy. 199) will be closed at Laurel Road and Caves Hwy. from 9:30 a.m. to noon on that day. Detours will be posted for at both closures. “Please be prepared for slow traffic during that time,” said organizer Harry Johnson ... Illinois Valley Golf Course will have a yard sale on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12 and Sept. 13 at the golf course to raise funds for course maintenance and continuance of the Junior Golf Program. Donations can be brought to the clubhouse prior to Sept. 10 ... Advice: Question your prejudices ... More advice: Remember that your attitude is just as important as the facts ... Bumper stickers: *Another dopeless hope fiend. *America needs a faith lift. *A cat, by any other name, is still a sneaky little furball that barfs on the furniture.

LAST WORDS - “The action of social revolution and the reaction of guarding against such revolution or combating it once it has begun are the cause of a great deal of the human misery with which history is permeated.” (Isaac Asimov)
