Four of the Grants Pass BearFest bears will visit Illinois Valley this month.
Courtesy of Evergreen Federal Bank, the two mothers and their cubs all were painted by Takilma artist Lane Cosner.
Representing the themes “Dagelma Dal-Dal” (trans-lation: Takilma Dragonfly”) and “T.J. Howell Memorial Biscuit Bear,” Cosner painted the fiberglass pairs for BearFests during 2006 and 2007.
“We thank Brady Adams for loaning us these beautiful bears, and Al Devine for making all the arrangements.” stated Cate Bendock, president of Illinois River Valley Arts Council (IRVAC). “We’re excited and honored to host them,” she said.
The first outing for the bears will be to visit IRVAC’s Second Friday ArtWalk from 5 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 14 with the special showing continuing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday the 15th.
In commemoration of Elijah Davidson’s discovery of the Oregon Caves in 1874, IRVAC will hold a special two-day open house at the Josephine County Bldg. with the theme, “Caves and Bears.” Cosner will be on hand Friday night to answer questions about his work.
Also Friday night only: Malaya and Gerry Canning from Happy Camp, Calif. will show “Visions of Nature” – seasonal photography, oils and silk painting. The Valley Chicks will present a 20-quilt “sneak preview” of their annual October Quilt Display and have raffle tickets for one of the quilts.

An easy art project, “Ojos de Dios” will be available for kids-of-all-ages both days, and IRVAC will have cold drinks to help raise money for
“Learning Through Art.” Placemats created by Wanda Goines will be available at $15 a pair to raise funds for her Oregon Caves mural project.
The second presentation of the four BearFest Bears will be at Lake Selmac for the Cycle Oregon event on Sept. 15. One of the bear cubs also will be displayd at I.V. Visitor Center during the intervening month.
