Youth Corps working on Rogue trails
From our weekly issue dated July 08, 2009
Through approximately Friday, July 10, a hard-working crew of 10 young persons ranging in ages from 14 to 15 years old, and two crew leaders, are improving the Rogue River Corridor within the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, High Cascade Ranger District.
Northwest Youth Corps (NYC) crews are ridding the trail of fallen wood, excess vegetation that hampers hikers and horsemen, during the work that began June 29, they also will improve trail structures and surfaces.
Work, being tackled by two separate crews, is occurring along 19.5 miles of the Upper Rogue River Trail from Hamaker Campground to the Crater Rim Viewpoint. NYC was especially picked because of its experience with hand and power tools in outdoor conservation settings, and reputation for high-quality, productive crews.
More than 300 Douglas County youth have participated in NYC, the region’s largest and oldest outdoor conservation and youth education program, since 1984.
Douglas County teen-agers and others from Southwestern Oregon (ages 16 to 19), who want the NYC experience, can apply for NYC’s fall program, beginning on Sept. 12. To enroll, youth should fill out an application as soon as possible at www.nwyouthcorps.org or phone (541) 349-5055.
