Firework destroys U.S. Mail
From our weekly issue dated July 08, 2009
Just after 5 a.m. Thursday, July 2, personnel at the Cave Junction Post Office, at 104 S. Hussey Ave., phoned the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office to report smoke coming from a postal drop box.
A police incident report log states that white smoke was coming from the drive-up U.S. Mail box that was not attached to the post office building.
Postmaster Lynn Hval and a manager responded to the scene and opened the mailbox. Illinois Valley Fire District personnel discovered a firework inside with tape around it.
All the contents of the mailbox were destroyed, JCSO stated.
Hval said that she has contacted postal customers whose mail could be identified. Other postal customers who deposited outgoing mail in the collection box after the last collection time of 3:45 p.m. on July 1 until 5 a.m. on July 2 should leave their name at the counter with a Postal clerk. The contents of the box have been sent to an inspection service, Hval said.
No suspects were located or charged as a result of the incident.
