Robert W. Baugh

Robert William “Ghosttown Bob” Baugh, 77, of Cave Junction, died Thursday, July 2, 2009 at a Royal Gardens Health & Rehabilitation Center in Grants Pass.

A military service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 11 at Eagle Point National Cemetery in Medford.

Arrangements are by Hull & Hull Funeral Directors, Grants Pass.

James N. Wells

Cave Junction native James Norvan Wells, 90, of Grants Pass, a member of an early day Illinois Valley family, died Sunday, June 28, 2009 at Three Rivers Community Hospital.

A funeral service was conducted Thursday, July 2, at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grants Pass with Pastor Steve Parker officiating. Private interment was at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Wells was born on Oct. 5, 1918 at his family’s farmhouse in Cave Junction to George & Elsie (Howard) Wells. He was a descendant of several pioneer families that have lived in Josephine County for more than 150 years. He was raised at the original Wells Ranch in Illinois Valley and worked as a farmer with his father.

In 1940 he married Margaret Lucinda Sowell, who died in 1984. In 1945 he moved to Tulelake, Calif., where he raised potatoes and sheep. In 1955 he moved to Grants Pass and worked for Southern Oregon Milk Producers (later known as Rogue Gold Dairy) on Seventh Street. He retired in 1982 from Rogue Gold Dairy at Fifth and H streets.

In 1986 he married Jenevie Therese Serpa, who died in 2008. He was a 50-year member of Grants Pass Masonic Lodge #84 AF & AM; and a member of the Elks Lodge and a 40+ Dance Club.

While his daughters were active in Girls Scouts, he volunteered his time to take scouts to their activities. While in Tulelake, he served on the school board.

Surviving are three daughters, Joanne Margaret Gass, of Huntington Beach, Calif., Janice Jeanne Orr, of Cathedral City, Calif., and Judith Kay Christensen, of Grants Pass; a stepdaughter, Mary Ellen Leake, of Lynnwood, Wash.; two stepsons, Raymond Leake, of Surprise, Ariz., and Robert Serpa, of Eureka, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson.

Arthur S. Patton

Former Cave Junction resident Arthur S. Patton, 96, died Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Peoples Retirement Community in Tacoma, Wash. Inurnment will be at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Wash.

Mr. Patton was born in Weiser, Idaho and attended schools in Idaho Falls and Twin Falls. He was a graduate of Oregon’s Linfield College. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and with the Federal Aviation Administration until his retirement.

On Aug. 20, 1957 he married the former Nina Johns Jarvis. He moved to Cave Junction from Pleasanton, Calif. in 1977 and was a member of First Baptist church in Grants Pass. In 2002 he moved to Tacoma.

He is survived by his wife, Nina; step-daughter, Laurie Robles, of Tacoma; five grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Leslie Ann Wilkins; two sisters, Helen Burkhart and Florence Brown; and a brother, Denny Patton.

Frank J. Houser

Frank J. Houser, 89, of Cave Junction, died Thursday, July 2, 2009 at his home.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 9 at Laurel Cemetery in Cave Junction with Dr. Carroll Bierbower officiating.

Illinois Valley Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.
