USFS visits thinning, R&R Lumber Co. sites
From our weekly issue dated July 01, 2009
U.S. Forest Service (USFS) officials from Washington, D.C. visited a restoration project and Rough & Ready Lumber Co. in Illinois Valley on Monday, June 29.
A restoration project on Hope Mountain was viewed by the visitors. Located in an area of previous clear-cuts, the stewardship effort also involves fuel reduction.
USFS is working with Siskiyou Project and Lomakatsi Restoration Project.
Forest executives from the nation’s capital examining the project John Phipps, associate deputy chief; and Tom Harbour, director of Fire & Aviation Management. Apparently they are among persons who have helped obtain stimulus funding for the area.
It was noted that approximately 30 Illinois Valley residents have been hired by Lomakatsi for the project.
The nonpublic tour also included staff from the regional office in Grants Pass.
Rough & Ready was visited because of its biomass energy project using woody debris and forest products not suitable for lumber.
