CAR SHOW! - Saturday, June 27 is the date for the 11th annual Antique & Classic Car Show in Cave Junction’s Jubilee Park. Sponsored by Cave Junction Lions Club, there is no admission fee for spectators. Vehicle registration will run from 8 to 11 a.m., with the “show-and-shine time” from noon to 4 p.m. Breakfast will be served in the pavilion by Kerby Belt Masonic Lodge 18 AF&AM from 7 to 11 a.m.; and Eastern Star will offer lunch from noon to 4 p.m. There will be 50/50 and raffle drawings throughout the day. Awards will be presented at 3 p.m.
Also during the show, the mobile health screening unit from Oregon Lions Sight & Hearing Foundation will be available to provide free preventive services. They include visual acuity, hearing, and blood pressure, glaucoma and diabetes screening to adults, and minors with written permission. (See the ad in this issue for details.)
VEGGIE VENUE - Selma Farmers Market adjacent to Selma Baptist Church on Hwy. 199 is open Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Offered is “produce from the many small farms and large gardens in Illinois Valley.” Also offered: “a variety of unique creations” by I.V.’s talented artists and craftsmen. Noted a market spokesman, “We are an enthusiastic growing market, but proud about keeping our authentic small-town feel.” And persons who want to sell fresh local produce, or handmade crafts and homemade goodies, should phone “Ruth” at 592-3759.
WRESTLING POKER - A Texas Hold ‘Em Tourney to benefit I.V. Wrestling Club youth will be held Friday, July 3 at the Junction Inn’s Boswell Room. Registration will begin at 5 p.m.; games at 6. There is a $50 buy-in, and unlimited buy-ins during the first hour. Cash prizes will be awarded. Food and beverages will be available. For more information phone Jay Miller at 597-2325.
FOURTH LIGHTS, ACTION - A fireworks show, preceded by patriotic events, is set for Saturday, July 4 at the Josephine County Fairgrounds in Grants Pass. Redwood Lions Club and others are sponsoring the program. (See the ad in this issue).
‘FORE!’ GRADS - Saturday, July 4 is on tap for the IVHS Alumni & Friends 22nd annual golf tournament at Illinois Valley Golf Course. It will be part of “Reunionmania 2009” as many of the valley’s graduates return to meet, greet and eat. A HIT OR A MYTH? - It’s been popular of late to say that young people no longer read newspapers. But the reality, notes Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association, is that 61 percent of 18- to 24-year-olds and 25- to 34-year-olds read a newspaper in an average week and 65 percent of them read a newspaper or visited a newspaper Website during the past week. GUNNIN’ IT - Saturday, July 11 is set for the annual Josephine County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) auction of forfeited, found and unclaimed weapons open only to Federal Licensed Dealers. A preview will be held July 10 for the auction at Great Western Auctioneers (GWA). JCSO said that victims of lost or stolen weapons can come to GWA on the 10th. If unclaimed property is identified, JCSO will assist in processing to return property to owners. Persons claiming ownership will be required to show proof of ownership or a police report dated prior to the preview. For more information contact GWA.
NOTEPAD - Fixing an “oops” is due because in last week’s issue it was stated that a dunk tank was loaned by Illinois Valley Lions Club. In fact, the club donated the tank to the IVHS rally squad several years ago ... Summer reading for elementary and middle school-age students who want to borrow books will be available through the Evergreen Elementary School library Mondays through Thursdays from 8:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. from Monday, July 6 through July 30. A “wing-ding” to celebrate the 50th anniversary and rededication of Hampshire Field/Grants Pass Airport will be held on Saturday, June 27 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Presented by the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 725, the event will include displays of experimental and antique airplanes. Breakfast and lunch will be available ... Funktional Fusion will begin the 2009 Grants Pass Concerts in the Park series on Tuesday, June 30 at Riverside Park. The series, sponsored by GP Chamber of Commence, will take place Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. through Aug. 11 ...
