The Illinois Valley High School girls softball team let one get away on Tuesday, May 12 in Merlin against North Valley.

The Cougars got it going in the first inning when Cindy Moore walked and stole second base, then scored on Morgan Brown’s single. Brown advanced on her theft of second and scored when Brittney Loyd’s ground ball was misplayed by the Knights’ third baseman.

The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The Knights scored one in the bottom half of the first inning to make it 2-1. The Knights pitching was off; however the Cougars were disciplined at the plate and had four free passes, including three hit batsman.

In the fourth inning Tammy Huntamer’s hard ground ball got away from the Knights, and the two straight hits by Moore and Brown, who got the RBI, to make it 6-4. Huntamer and the Cougars shut down the Knights in the third through sixth innings.

I.V. scored one more in the fifth, on hits by Thea Barker-Cortrecht, Lucy Bell, a walked by Kya McAlister and an RBI single by Moore.

With the score 7-4 the Lady Knights rallied to score four times on five hits and a walk, with the big hit coming from Rachael Conard to end the game. The final score: Knights 8, Cougars 7.

“What a way to finish the season, said head coach Ken Hix. “My girls played the best they have played all season and to lose it in the bottom of the seventh is a heartbreaker.

“I am so proud of all of them. We have come a long way this season,” he added.

Moore was 3-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Brown went 2-4, two RBIs and one run; Huntamer and Bell each scored twice. Huntamer went the distance for the Cougars.
