IRVAC to host concert at Deer Creek

From our weekly issue dated May 20, 2009

A special lively open-air concert, Live at Deer Creek Center, will be performed from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 7 at the Siskiyou Field Institute site at 1241 Illinois River Road, 1.3 miles west of the Selma Post Office.

The concert offers listeners three ensembles at bargain admission rates.

Students 18 and younger can attend for free when accompanied by a paying adult. There also are special prices for unaccompanied high school students, especially if tickets are obtained in advance.

Sponsored by Illinois River Valley Arts Council (IRVAC), the musical offerings will begin at 4 p.m. with the Grants Pass barbershop quartet Klassified. Lead singer Buddy Seeberg sang barbershop professionally for 30 years, first at Disneyland in Anaheim, and later at Disneyworld in Orlando. The quartet is rounded out by tenor Michael Biggs, bass Doug Borngasser and baritone Rich Watkins.

Popular standards will include Dear Hearts and Gentle People, Home on the Range, My Wild Irish Rose and The Irish Blessing.

Next on the program, the woodwind quartet, Quintessentials, will perform selections ranging from pop and ragtime to classical from such composers as Scott Joplin, George Gershwin, Mozart and Beethoven. This woodwind quintet has played together for 10 years and includes Shirley Barklind on flute, Kim Kostrna on clarinet, Joe Chankin, on oboe; bassoonist Dick Stryker, and Fred Holman on French horn.

The performances will culminate with the Rogue Community College Orchestra led by Cave Junction’s own T. Lund; winner of the “Mr. Holland’s Opus” national award for teaching excellence. This 37-piece ensemble, composed of RCC students and professionals, will play Haydn’s London Symphony, selections from Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Concerto for Orchestra by Jean-Baptiste Breval, Tales from the Vienna Woods by Strauss and a march by John Phillip Sousa for a rousing finale.

Patrons are encouraged to bring their own seating and a picnic. Hot barbecue sandwiches, Taylor’s Sausage hot dogs and Polish dogs will be available. Wine will be provided courtesy of Bridgeview Vineyards Winery, and box picnics from Kate Dwyer Catering also will be for sale. Hard alcohol is prohibited. Gates will open at 3 p.m.

This concert will be the first of three sponsored by IRVAC to benefit “Learning Through Art” which offers hands-on activities to enhance the standard curriculum at area schools.

The two other concerts are scheduled in December. On Sunday, December 6th, several ensembles from RCC will again perform at the Deer Creek Center. Other family-friendly activities will include ornament-making and a Christmas carol sing-along. On Saturday, December 19th, the Jefferson Baroque Orchestra will perform at Lorna Bryne Middle School.

Advance ticket purchases at a reduced price for all three concerts are available. Tickets can be purchased at Cabin Chemistry or Embroidered Adaptations, both in Cave Junction; Listen Here in Grants Pass or at the gate. Due to limited parking, patrons are strongly encouraged to carpool.

The mission of IRVAC, a charitable 501c3 organization, is to enrich the lives of the residents of the Illinois River Valley by fostering creativity and providing art education and art experiences.

“Our volunteers work to make the arts accessible to valley residents.” explains IRVAC President Cate Bendock. “We realize times are tough, and we want to do our part to help by offering reduced price tickets.

“We welcome everyone to come and enjoy some wonderful music in a beautiful setting.” Further information is available by phoning 592-5333 or at www.irvac.com.
