Harvest Kitchen meal site needs help
From our weekly issue dated May 20, 2009
Harvest Kitchen, the sole remaining “free lunch” site in Illinois Valley, according to coordinator John Scott, has added a third day for meals, but needs a bit of help.
Scott recently took over supervision and hands-on work from Linda Butler. She served as head volunteer for approximately eight years. The new “chief kook and bottle-washer,” as he calls himself, has announced a new schedule for all comers at the site, provided by St. Matthias Episcopal Church at the north end of Cave Junction.
Harvest Kitchen now is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. “serving lunch to the needy and underprivileged,” said Scott. “Don’t be shy,” he added, “just come in and have a meal with us -- all are welcome.
“You don’t need to be needy, just hungry. And word has it that the food ain’t too bad either.” Scott said that the site dishes out some 40 to 80 servings per day. To-go containers are offered those who need them, he said.
He’s asking that the community consider helping the effort. Needed are a large mixer, an electric or hand-crank opener for #10 cans, a gas-powered stove (either an old one with cast-iron burners, or a commercial model). And donations of cash and food always are appreciated.
“We operate entirely on the kindness and charity of the good folks of Illinois Valley and surrounding area,” said Scott.
As to his newfound volunteer job, he said, “I’ve always thought a big family would be cool. I’ve been known to quip about having 40 kids and a school bus to get around in. But I’ve never been able to convince my lovely bride of 30-plus years of that. Anyway, meal time has always been my favorite time to get together with the family. So I guess I’ve finally found my calling.”
Scott can be reached between 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. by phoning 597-4114 or 597-2438. Or donations can be sent to him at P.O. Box 377, Selma OR 97538; or contact him via stjohn@cavenet.com.
