Alvin Elmer
Alvin “Slick” Elmer, 81, of Grants Pass, died Thursday, May 7, 2009 at a foster care home. No service is planned. He was born Aug. 9, 1927 on the family farm near Newport, Wash. to Maude Lomoreaux Genks & William Elmer.
He was known to friends and family as “Slick,” and was a World War II veteran. He lived most of his years in central Nevada. He was a man of many interests. One was mining, and he owned mining property and managed various operations.
“Slick” liked to hunt, fish, and work with horses. He spent some of his years as a saddle bronc rider. He was also a professional mandolin/guitar player, and was asked many times to play at gatherings.
He is survived by three sons, Shawn Elmer, of Cave Junction, Ray Elmer, of Connecticut, and Casey Elmer, of Reno, Nev. He has one surviving brother, John Elmer, of Ukiah, Calif.; and two sisters, Ethel Miller, of Potter Valley, Calif., and Mylenia “Teenie” Persyn, of Newport.
Mr. Elmer was preceeded in death by a daughter, Patricia Elmer. He was the youngest of 11 children. His siblings who preceded him in death are brothers Walter, Albert, Joe, Dave, Ed, and Byron; and a sister, Mildred.
