MEMORIAL CLOSURES - Monday, May 25 marks Memorial Day. Many area businesses, including banks, and the U.S. Post Office will be closed. There are no classes scheduled for Evergreen Elementary, Lorna Byrne Middle and Illinois Valley High schools.

ROSY REQUEST - Roses are needed at Illinois Valley High School to help decorate arches that will be used during graduation exercises on Thursday, June 4. Anyone with roses available to be cut and picked up is asked to phone 592-2116.

PARK PRETTIFICATION - Forestry Action Committee is spearheading a project to reclaim and restore the Old City Park at the south end of Old Stage Road. A work party will be held on Saturday, May 23 beginning at 9 a.m. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, tools and drinking water. Participants will collect trash and pull weeds along Illinois River. Rotary Club of Illinois Valley members also will participate. The long-term goal is to rehabilitate the city property, and potentially to create amenities such as a botanical trail, disc golf course and picnic areas. ALPACA ACTION - Suri Futures Alpaca Farm will host open farm days on Sunday and Monday, May 24 and 25. There is no cost to stop by and visit with the spring babies and check out the fine fiber products. On Monday, there will be a shearing demonstration, beginning at 11 a.m. Suri Futures is located at the west end of River Street in Cave Junction (look for the white barn). POWER OF PURPLE - A walk to raise cancer awareness will be held on Saturday, May 30 in Downtown CJ. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be at 10 a.m. at the Josephine County Bldg., and the event will run until 2 p.m. Organizers said that they are looking for cancer survivors to come out and wear purple. For information phone Susan Hatch at 592-4705. Also, as a part of the cancer awareness event, Crystal at Back Street Salon in Western Plaza will be “cutting hair for the cure.”

BOYS (& GIRLS) OF SUMMER - Summer registration has begun for Illinois Valley Branch of Boys & Girls Clubs Summer 2009 programs. From June 15 to Aug. 14 Boys & Girls Club will offer 10 hours per day of “programs, food and fun.” Phone 592-4771 or 592-6151 after 2 p.m. for more information. Or visit bgcrv.com.

BRING BACK BEDS - Illinois Valley Lions Club is seeking the return of borrowed hospital equipment. Stock is low, the Lions say, especially hospital beds. If anyone has equipment that they no longer are using, phone 592-4135. The club will pick up the equipment to loan to the next person in need.

PARADE PREPARATIONS - “Labor Day is coming,” says Illinois Valley Lions Club member Harry Johnson. “It's time for all of you to get your floats dusted off or start making them.” This year’s Labor Day Parade theme is 150 years of Oregon History, Hear the Past, See the Future. Float entries should be made to fit this theme. The parade will be held on Monday, Sept. 7. For assistance or questions phone Johnson at 596-2104.

NOTEPAD - Friday, May 22 is a staff development day, so no classes will be held that day in Three Rivers School District ... American Red Cross will hold a blood drive on Thursday, May 28 from 1 to 6 p.m. at Illinois Valley Senior Center on E. River Street. Phone (800) 448-3543 for information ... Utensils from Gourds is the name of a class offered by Spiral Living Center on Saturday, May 23. Suzanne Vautier will teach the class, which will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Phone 592-3642 for more ... IVHS graduation for the Class of 2009 will be held on Thursday, June 4 beginning at 7:30 p.m. ... A unique “doll house” that’s a replica of The Chateau at Oregon Caves National Monument will be raffled on July 5 during the annual I.V. Alumni & Friends picnic. Tickets are available at Illinois Valley Visitor Center, and Sterling Savings Bank (Cave Junction). Proceeds will benefit the alumni’s IVHS scholarship fund ... A Family Fun Day will be held on Saturday, June 6 from 11 a,m. to 4 p.m. at the O'Brien Country Store. This community event is a fund-raiser for the Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance and a celebration of Jimmy & Salena Su and their four years of ownership of the O'Brien Store.
