Classic series to begin at Chateau May 8-9
From our weekly issue dated April 29, 2009
Guitar concerts by solo artist David Rogers on Friday and Saturday, May 8 and 9, will kick off the “Classics at the Chateau” series at Oregon Caves National Monument.
The concerts will open the 2009 season of special events marking the 75th anniversary of the Chateau, one of the Great Lodges of Oregon. It could be a great mini-vacation close to home: dine, hear a guitar concert, stay overnight and hike the nearby trails at the monument.
Concert organizer Sue Williams says that it is well worth the 20-mile drive from Cave Junction to hear this renowned guitarist perform in the picturesque setting of the historic National Park Service lodge. The dining room will offer a tempting menu of locally grown food and locally made wines and micro-brews.
Attendees can enjoy the 8 p.m. guitar concert after dinner with coffee or wine. The concerts are free to diners and lodge guests.
The Chateau’s grand lobby has surprisingly good acoustics, so any seat is a good seat for this concert. Take some friends and celebrate the Chateau’s and the Caves’ birthdays with this early season event. Phone for dinner reservations, as seats fill quickly for concerts.
Rogers recently was hailed by the New York Times as “a prominent guitarist” who fuses classical, Jazz, early and world music elements into powerful, moving and virtuoso performances. Included are original compositions and traditional repertoire.
The Washington Post praised his solo improvisational passage work. He was called a “modern master of the classical guitar” by 20th Century Guitar.
Classicstoday.com praised his “first rate instrumental artistry,” and the Lute Society of America Quarterly called his technique “formidable.” He is an endorsing artist for GHS Strings, and his music has been featured in major guitar magazines such as Fingerstyle Guitar in the United States, and Akustic Gitarre in Germany.

Rogers, guitarist for Oregon Shakespeare Festival, is a music faculty member at Southern Oregon University at Ashland. He is lead guitarist and lutenist with the Terra Nova Consort, and made his European debut at the Tage Alter und Neuer Musik Regensburg 2000 Festival with the Consort ensemble.
His performances have been broadcast on American National Public Radio and Bayrische Rundfunk, including the nationally syndicated “Performance Today” (live performance/interview in Washington, D.C. by NPR) and Harmonia programs.
Rogers has recorded for Dorian, Callisto and Focus. He has given recitals and conducted master classes throughout North America at sites including the San Francisco Conservatory, University of Southern California, and The Interlochen National Arts Camp.
He studied historical plucked strings with Hopkinson Smith and Eugen Dombois at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland; with Thomas Binkley at Indiana University; and with Lyle Nordstrom at Oakland University. He has studied guitar with Joseph Fava at Wayne State University. With these impressive credentials, listeners should be enthralled with his Chateau performances May 8 and 9.
