Cable television service to Illinois Valley via Charter Communications was scheduled to be discontinued as of Monday, March 23.

Cave Junction City Recorder Jim Polk said that he was contacted by a representative from Charter on the afternoon of Friday, March 20. The area’s new cable provider, Almega, was supposed to contract with Pacific Power and Frontier to have their lines on the power company poles, but never did so, Polk said.

Charter has been paying the pole fee in the meantime, but has decided to discontinue that practice. The company sold and transferred its system on Jan. 1, 2007.

“Basically, Charter has been getting the bill and paid it for the last two years, even though they no longer own the system,” Polk said.

As such, employees of Charter began removing its plant equipment on March 23, which will terminate cable service to all customers.

Polk said that customers wishing to complain can phone PC One/AlMega, the area’s new cable system provider, at (817) 685-9588. Customers should not try to complain to Charter employees who are removing their company’s equipment, Polk said, because those representatives lack the authority or obligation to discuss those issues.

Due to these circumstances, it is likely that Illinois Valley News will discontinue publishing its regular television guide as of the April 1 issue. More information on this subject will be available in the April 1 issue of Illinois Valley News.
