Arlene Root

Cave Junction resident Arlene Root, 72, died on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.

A recitation of the rosary was conducted Friday, March 20 at Illinois Valley Funeral Directors Chapel in Cave Junction.

A funeral Mass was held Saturday, March 21 at St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church in Cave Junction. Interment followed at Laurel Cemetery, also in Cave Junction.

Mrs. Root was born on No. 6, 1936 in Fond Du Lac, Wis. to Nicolas & Agnes (Keeler) Carras. As an infant, she moved with her family to Oakland, Calif. In the late 1950s she received her associates degree from Richmond College, and worked as a licensed practical nurse (LPN). In 1989 she moved from Durham, Calif. to Cave Junction. She worked as an LPN for nursing homes and home health care.

Mrs. Root was a member of St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church for many years. She enjoyed playing cards, computer games, sewing, and making rosaries.

Survivors include a daughter, Victoria Jorgensen, of Oroville, Calif.; son, Steven Dean, of Merlin; a sister, Patricia Shafer, of Cave Junction; a brother, Bud Keeney, of Durham; two grandsons; and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Hudson, in 1986.


Larry M. Watkins Sr.

A private gathering will be held for Selma resident Larry Martin Watkins Sr., 63, who died Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at his home.

Mr. Watkins was born April 21, 1945 in Crescent City, Calif. Throughout his life, he lived in and out of the Cave Junction area. He was a commercial fisherman and provided home health-care for senior citizens. He was a member of the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include a son, Larry Jr.; a daughter, Trish; a stepson, Duane; and a stepdaughter, Sheryl, both of Selma; his father, Harvey Watkins, of Crescent City; his mother, Alice Matthews, of O’Brien; two sisters, Evie Wise, of Cave Junction, and Pam Hay of Crescent City; three brothers, Allen Watkins, of Cave Junction, Marvin Watkins, of Selma, and Ed Watkins, of O’Brien; and all of the Lansdown Family.

Illinois Valley Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.
