BETTER BANKING - The use of live willow structures to stabilize and restore riverbanks is the topic of a free program by Dr. John Gardiner during the regular monthly meeting of Illinois Valley Watershed Council. Gardiner will highlight a recently completed project on the Mad River, near McKinleyville, Calif. The talk and slide-show will be presented on Thursday, March 26 at 8 p.m. in the Josephine County Bldg. in Downtown Cave Junction.

SKILLS SCHOOL - The second annual Selma Skill Share will be held on Saturday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Selma Community Center, 18255 Redwood Hwy. The free event, presented by Spiral Living Center and Selma Center, will feature more than 18 workshops. Included are hands-on activities such as friction fire-starting, bicycle repair, tool sharpening, finger-weaving, crocheting string bags, and children’s seed planting (eggshell garden starts). There will be presentations on seed saving, building compost and soil, burning small-diameter wood to add carbon to the garden (biochar), raising chicks, making tonic beverages, practicing communication skills, discussing universal health care, and the benefits of natural spring cleanses. WORKERS WANTED - Glass Rail Outfit Community Center will hold a workday on Saturday, March 28 beginning at 10 a.m. to prepare a site for a therapeutic riding area. STREAMING SCENE - A benefit for Hope Mountain Radio will be held at Dome School, 9367 Takilma Road, on Saturday, April 4 beginning at 6:30 p.m. Besides food and raffles, dancing and live music from Bob and the Lunatics, Hard Rain, Tribe and Mosaic will be featured. Admission is on a sliding scale: “No donation too small or too huge,” said organizers. Phone 592-4799.

ROCK ON - Roxy Ann Gem & Mineral Society will host its 54th annual Gem, Jewelry & Mineral Show on Saturday, April 4 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sunday, April 5 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Medford Armory, 1701 S. Pacific Hwy. in Medford. There will be more than 50 exhibits and 20 dealers. Proceeds will help provide geology scholarships at Southern Oregon University at Ashland and maintain Crater Rock Museum in Central Point.

NOTEPAD - Do you know an Illinois Valley High School senior who is caring, has a commitment to school and community, and should be recognized as Citizen of the Year? If so, nominate the student for the Savannah Bassett Good Citizen Award in memory of Savannah Bassett, a senior at IVHS, who gave to school and community. The annual round-up of kindergarten and first-grade students will be held at Evergreen Elementary School on Thursday, May 7. This is an opportunity to visit the school, meet teachers and submit paperwork. Students must be 5-years old by Sept. 1 to attend kindergarten.
