Bob's Corner
From our weekly issue dated March 18, 2009
Readers of this newspaper might notice in our flag this week (that’s the thing on top of page 1) that this issue marks the beginning of the 72nd year of the valley’s newspaper.
We’ve only been operating the Noose for 23 years, although some weeks it feels like we’ve been here through the entire seven-plus decades. But our staff, led by Michelle Binker, continues to produce a quality community publication. That is not an immodest comment. I can say it because in comparison to other weekly newspapers, Illinois Valley News stands out.
To see who works to produce this newspaper, see the mast. (That’s the box at the bottom of page 2.) Some of our audience has cast and will cast aspersions, but so be it. I say, let our critics have their say; it’s the American way.
This is a short column because I’m still recovering from a bronchitis/pneumonia/flu/totally nasty ailment that hit me late last week. I was bedridden for nearly three days. Actually, most of the office staff has, has had, or is recovering from some version of a similar illness. I know: There’s a lot of that going around.
We appreciate this community for its diversity, and for the fact that despite widely ranging viewpoints on many issues, we manage to live pretty much in harmony with each other. Odd way of putting it, but that’s how I feel. Hope none of you get “The Ailment.” But if you do, our prayers for a quick recovery will be with you.
And happy birthday to Illinois Valley News for turning 72.
