Winter named to Oregon Seniors Team

Illinois Valley High School wrestler Sam Winter has been invited to be a member of the Oregon Seniors Team for the annual Cal-Ore dual meet that will be held Saturday, March 14.
The match will be staged in Redding, Calif. this year. Harry Mondale, the retired and much-honored coach of Phoenix High, will coach the Oregon team. Winter will wrestle Kyle West, of Oakridge High, in the 140-weight class in his first match.
“Big matches have prepared me for this best-of-the-best tournament,” said Winter. He placed first in his weight class at the recent state tournament.
Regarding Cougar coach Jay Miller’s contributions to his success this season, Winter said, “Coach pushes me when sometimes I think I don’t need to train as hard. However, he is my coach, and you just put your head down and do what he asks.”
As for “bringing it home” from the meet for IVHS and the valley, the young grappler stated, “All right, OK.”
