‘Like a thief in the night;’ who is this Watchman?
From our weekly issue dated March 11, 2009
He doesn’t wear a cape or a cowl, but Cave Junction apparently has its own unsolicited version of a man who could be called The Avenger of Crime.
Notice of the avenger, who calls himself The Watchman, arrived via a Crayola box hanging on a screw by the front door at the Illinois Valley News office.
Would this top the runaway emus on Caves Hwy. ?
The box was not ticking, and didn’t appear too dangerous, so it was brought into the office. Most people probably would slide a note under the front door, so why a crayon box? “Editor read” were the instructions written on the box: “Dear Editor, I would like you to print this please. With more to follow about my exploits at night. Thank you, The Watchman.
“As I creep like a thief in the night slowly to the U-Haul rentals, my dog becomes agitated by the pungent smell of gasoline. Crouched below the gas tank siphoning gas from the truck is yet another drunk teen.
Now several times I’ve done this yet still I don’t feel clean. My past will not let me forget the person I used to be. So I will repay this world by stopping any crime I see.”

At least one Cave Junction resident has encountered The Watchman, who seemed to think that the man was up to no good. However, the resident, who noted the dog with the Good Samaritan, was only picking up some cash he had dropped before running across Hwy. 199 to Shop Smart Food Warehouse.
With The Watchman out there protecting us, maybe some of the two-legged night crawlers will be hampered from committing their nefarious deeds.
The only mystery remains -- with 24 crayons to choose from, why did the Watchman use black ink for the letter?
