SPICY BENEFIT - Four kinds of chili, including a vegetarian option, will be offered during a fund-raiser dinner at Selma Community Center on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The center is at 16255 Redwood Hwy., next to Selma Baptist Church. Sourdough or corn bread, beverages and dessert will be included. Proceeds will go toward repair and improvement of the center.

ARTSY PARTY - Illinois River Valley Arts Council will hold its sixth annual Winter Gala on Sunday, Feb. 22 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Deer Creek Center, 1241 Illinois River Road in Selma. The event will feature music by Celtic music duo George & Anwyn Leverett, of O’Brien, plus the I.V. String Band, and Wally Aiken. Silent and live auctions of distinctive art-and-craft items, vacation get-aways and more will help raise funds for Learning Through Art and Art Walk. Featured refreshments will be complimentary appetizers by several area caterers and a cash-bar offering of Foris Winery vintages. Tickets are available at Embroidered Adaptations, Jefferson State Financial Group and Evergreen Federal Bank in Cave Junction. They also will be available at the door. BIBLIOPHILES WANTED - Josephine County Community Libraries will hold a meeting concerning reopening the Illinois Valley Branch Library on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Josephine County Bldg. 102 S. Redwood Hwy. in Cave Junction. “We will identify what’s required, set the goals and map a strategy,” said JCLI.

FIELD OF DREAMS - In little more than two months, 30 sports fields from among hundreds nominated nation wide will be chosen for restoration through Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes’ “Earn Your Stripes” program. The softball field at Illinois Valley High School has been nominated, and the community can demonstrate its support by visiting frostedflakes.com and voting to keep I.V. in the semifinals.



HONORS HUMOR - Comedian Miles Kehoe (A&E, MTV and Comedy Central) will perform at Taylor’s Country Store in Cave Junction on Saturday, March 7. The event is a fund-raiser for the IVHS Chapter of the National Honor Society. Dinner seating will begin at 7 p.m.; the show will start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Taylor’s and the IVHS office; or phone Patrice Tucker at 592-2116.

COUGAR CASH - Illinois Valley Booster Club is conducting a fund-raiser during halftime of home basketball games in Ken Mann Memorial Gym. Three ticket-holders get a chance to win “Cougar Bucks” and claim cash. Money is carried over at each game until there is a winner. The final home game for the season is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 24 (boys vs. North Valley). See the IVHS Activities Calendar in this issue.

NOTEPAD - The DADS program, offered through the Pregnancy Center of Illinois Valley, is available to men who are parenting or have a child on the way. Parenting Nights are held on the first and third Tuesdays beginning at 6:30 p.m. Child-care is available.
