A half-dozen mongrel puppies were abandoned in a small box outside of Shop Smart Food Warehouse on Friday, Feb. 6. Passers-by expressed dismay and anger toward the ‘whoever would do such a thing.’ Shop Smart employees took pity on the pups, placing them in two larger boxes with food and water; one cared for the puppies at her home during the weekend. A few of the dogs were adopted; the rest were turned over to county animal control. (Photos by Michelle Binker, I.V. News )

Wrestlers from Lorna Byrne (LBMS), Fleming, Lincoln Savage, Grants Pass North and South middle schools, and one youngster from Phoenix, participated in the first Caleb Renno Memorial Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 7 in Ken Mann Memorial Gym at Illinois Valley High School. The Lorna Byrne program, which hosted the event, is in its first year. North Middle School took top honors, South came in second, and LBMS third. Renno, a wildland firefighter who died in an August 2008 aviation accident, was a wrestler in his youth. His family was presented a commemorative plaque from friends and teammates. Funds raised during the event from entry fees and concessions go to the I.V. Wrestling Club, which supports Illinois Valley High School, Lorna Byrne and I.V. Youth wrestling programs.
