VALENTINE SOCK HOP - Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance will host a sock hop on Saturday, Feb. 14 from 7 to 10 p.m. at I.V. Senior Center, 520 E. River St. Said the sponsor, “Pull on your favorite duds from the ‘50s and ‘60s, and boogie on down for dance contests, a Limbo contest, kissing booth, prizes, and more.” Suggested donation for admission is $10. COUGAR CASH - Illinois Valley Booster Club is conducting a fund-raiser during halftime of home basketball games in Ken Mann Memorial Gym. Three ticket-holders get a chance to win “Cougar Bucks” and claim cash. Money is carried over at each game until there is a winner. Next home games are scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 17 (girls vs. Henley) and Friday, Feb. 20 (boys vs. Hidden Valley). See the IVHS Activities Calendar in this issue.
FREE PARK DAY - To celebrate Oregon’s 150th anniversary, Josephine County Parks Dept. is offering a free-use day on Saturday, Feb. 14. Excluding yurts and reserved campsites, day-use and camping will be free on a first-come, first-served basis. Contact JoCo Parks at 474-5285 for information.
HONORS HUMOR - Comedian Miles Kehoe (A&E, MTV and Comedy Central) will perform at Taylor’s Country Store in Cave Junction on Saturday, March 7. The event is a fund-raiser for the IVHS Chapter of the National Honor Society. WOODY GOODY - Siskiyou Field Institute is offering a class, Winter Woody Twig Species Identification, from Feb. 28 to March 1. Participants will learn about winter adaptations specific to woody plants in Illinois Valley. There is a fee. Phone 597-8530 or visit thesfi.org.
ARTSY PARTY - Illinois River Valley Arts Council will hold its sixth annual Winter Gala on Sunday, Feb. 22 from 2 to 5 p.m. at Deer Creek Center, 1241 Illinois River Road in Selma. The event will feature music by Celtic music duo George & Anwyn Leverett, of O’Brien, plus the I.V. String Band, and Wally Aiken. Silent and live auctions of distinctive art-and-craft items, vacation get-aways and more will help raise funds for Learning Through Art and Art Walk. Refreshments feature complimentary appetizers by several area caterers and a cash-bar offering of Foris Winery vintages. Tickets are available at Embroidered Adaptations, Jefferson State Financial Group and Evergreen Federal Bank in Cave Junction. They also will be available at the door. BAKING FOR RELAY - It is time to start raising money for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event on June 13 & 14; hosted this year by North Valley High School in Merlin. SOFCU Community Credit Union’s team is The SOFCU Believers. It is one of 50+ teams throughout the Rogue and Illinois valleys that will participate. The SOFCU Believers already are beginning to raise money for the cause, and the Women’s Ministry group from Cave Junction Assembly of God Church is helping. It will offer Valentine floral arrangements and baked goods on Friday, Feb. 13 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in front of the Cave Junction Post Office. All proceeds will go toward The SOFCU Believers’ fund-raising goal. CHEAP FIX - SNYP (Spay/Neuter Your Pet) is offering discount spay/neuter certificates during its February “Prevent a Litter” campaign. The open gathering will begin at noon at Michelle’s Family Restaurant in CJ … An informational meeting about reopening the Cave Junction Branch Library will be held Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at the Josephine County Bldg. in CJ. It also is open to Three Rivers School District employees and IVHS students. Classes will be held Wednesday evenings beginning March 4. Josiah Dean, a Rogue Community College instructor, will teach.
