Jobless rate in Jo County passes 10%

With construction, leisure & hospitality, and manufacturing leading the way negatively, the Josephine County unemployment rate climbed to 10.9 percent during November, said Oregon Employment Dept. (OED).

The rate from November 2007 was 7.2 percent, and it was 9.1 percent for October this year, said OED.

Figures show that the county lost 340 jobs, taking the November nonfarm employment tally to 25,320.



Countywide, the number of jobless persons was at 3,927 based on unemployment figures. That’s a rise of 1,417 persons claiming unemployment benefits since November 2007.

In November, the leisure & hospitality sector lost 100 seasonal positions, down 10 jobs throughout the last year. Manufacturing dropped 80 jobs in November, with 250 lost in the past year; and construction saw 40 fewer in November and 140 during prior year.

Jackson County’s November jobless rate was 8.7 percent, up from 7.4 percent in October. Douglas County had a November rate of 11.5 percent, up from 9.2 percent during October.
