Hiring of recount workers OK’d for Brown’s request

From our weekly issue dated December 17, 2008

In the matter of a recount, called for by Josephine County Board of Commissioners position 3 candidate Jack Brown, the county board on Monday, Dec. 15 voted 2-0 to allow the county clerk’s office to hire 22 election workers to undertake the job.

Commissioner Jim Raffenburg did not attend the meeting in the commissioners’ conference room at the courthouse in Grants Pass.

Commissioner Dwight Ellis, Brown’s opponent and official winner of the Nov. 4 general election, did not abstain, but moved to approve the hires. He indicated that he thought it would make no difference.

Ellis quipped for the audience that at least the hirees would have a little extra money coming in at Christmastime.

Brown is required by state law to pay for the election workers. The recount is not being paid for with county funds, noted commission Chairman Dave Toler .
