City accused of polluting fish habitat streams

From our weekly issue dated December 10, 2008

Serious violations by the city of Cave Junction exist in connection with pollution of streams and the effect on aquatic wildlife, the city council was told Monday night, Dec. 8 in city hall.

Rural Cave Junction resident Joel Perkins made the statement. He previously has addressed the council about the same matter.

Because of his assertions, which he said are based on evaluations by professionals in such matters, Mayor Tony Paulson and Travis Robbins of public works were to view areas Tuesday, Dec. 9. They were to meet with Anita Huffman of the Oregon Dept. of State Lands.

Perkins told the council, “Instead of developers running the community, it’s time for a change. The city needs to clean up its tributaries.

“Riparian and fish habitat are involved,” he said, “and no one wants to see the city incur more fines -- just meet the requirements.”

Perkins recently provided the council Fish Presence Survey forms. They are from the Oregon Dept. of Forestry and Oregon Dept. of Fish & Wildlife. George Creek, Brooks Creek and Mill Creek are involved, Perkins noted.

Development has caused unnecessary and illegal harmful effects on fish habitat, as well as other aquatic wildlife, Perkins indicated.
