Masked rapist/robber suspect sought

From our weekly issue dated November 26, 2008

Deputies are seeking a stocking-masked suspect in a Cave Junction case involving reported burglary and attempted rape, said Josephine County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO).

A woman, who lives on W. River Street, phoned 911 at 6:45 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 21 to report that a man entered her residence through an unlocked door, said JCSO Detective Sgt. Ken Selig.

He said that “due to inadequate patrol staffing,” Sheriff Gil Gilbertson responded from his home to aid the victim until detectives with the Major Crimes unit could arrive on scene an hour later.

Investigators interviewed the woman and several neighbors, and processed the scene for evidence, Selig said. JCSO was told by the woman that the man “confronted her as she lay sleeping and demanded sex.” The suspect, who wore a dark nylon stocking over his head, including his face, “threatened to use a knife against her if she refused.

“The victim,” Selig continued, “told 911 operators she managed to escape with only minor injuries.” The suspect left on foot.

He was wearing denim jeans, and a dark maroon knit sweater with three to four stripes across the front. Law enforcement agencies were notified to be on the lookout.

Anyone with information about the incident and the suspect is asked to phone JCSO Detective John Auborn at 474-5153 or the confidential tip line at 474-5160.
