TURKEY THURSDAY - A free Thanksgiving Day meal will be served by “Cave Junction Cares” on Thursday, Nov. 27 from noon to 2 p.m. in Jubilee Park. The pavilion will be heated for the all-you-can-eat feast. Volunteers and donations of any kind “will be gladly accepted and appreciated.” Donations can be left at Bi-Rite Auto Parts behind Michelle’s Family Restaurant; or mail contributions to Lynn Boucher Johnson at P.O. Box 1841, Cave Junction 97523.

FESTIVE FUN - An auction preceded by a mixer with beer-and-wine tasting, thanks to Bridgeview Vineyards Winery and Wild River Brewing & Pizza Co., will be held Friday, Dec. 5. The annual event by Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce at Wild River in Cave Junction will begin at 6 p.m. with the fun auction at 7. Anna Swett, of Anna’s Attic Treasures (still open for business), will serve as chief clerk; and Jim Frick, a chamber director and broker at Century 21 Harris & Taylor, again will serve as auctioneer. Donations of merchandise and certificates for the fund-raiser are requested. Items can be left at the Illinois Valley News office; or phone 592-2541 or 592-3326 for pick up.

FORIS BOUQUET - In the current Dow Jones Oregon Pinot Noir Index, Foris Vineyards Winery “2006” of Illinois Valley tied for “Best Value” with Yamhill Valley Vineyards “Estate” 2006. Both received “very good” ratings. However, the Foris vintage sells for $18.99; while Yamhill’s goes for $19.95. About the Foris offering, it’s noted: “Classy, with tightly wound fruit and a raspberry-spice-oak-nutmeg finish. Even a touch of chocolate. Lovely.” (I.V. SANTA CLAUSE - Illinois Valley News, the valley’s own actual newspaper, will publish its annual Christmas section with children’s letters to Santa and original art work in its Dec. 17 issue. The deadline to submit letters and original art is Thursday, Dec. 4. And the valley’s real newspaper that covers real community news will print holiday greetings from valley merchants in the Dec. 17 issue. Phone 592-2541 for more information.

‘FRIENDS OF LOIS’ - Only for the coming holiday eves of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s on Nov. 26, and Dec. 24 and 31 -- all on Wednesdays -- the “Friends of Lois” Al-Anon family group will change locations. On those dates the group will meet at the Illinois Valley Resource Center on E. River Street. Otherwise, meetings will be held at I.V. Senior Center on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m. Al-Anon family groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experiences, strengths and hopes to help solve their common problems. TRUST BUCKS - Meyer Memorial Trust (not related to Fred Meyer Corp.) announced that it recently awarded some $8.6 million in grants and program-related investments to nonprofit organizations. They include Forestry Action Committee of the Illinois Basin Interest Group in Cave Junction, which received $15,000 for staff support and to conduct fund-raising training for the board and staff. Also, Common Ground Community Mediation Center in Grants Pass was awarded $24,999 to conduct a community outreach program.
