I spoke with Chuck Debrett about the Citizens on Patrol and the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Program. On the day of the sting, Oct. 30, he and others witnessed a child struggle to cross the street, as those involved were standing there sharing stories of the scary traffic conditions.

Drivers responded to a piece of yellow plastic with more decency and order then they did for the safety of that child.

At approximately 5 on Friday, Oct. 31, Halloween night, the idea came to do something for Crosswalk Safety (CS). On the computer was the beginning of Mission Statement cards, so 150+ were printed. A dozen CS bracelets were in the basket ready to go somewhere, and as a result I was sitting on a bench (while my husband watched from across the street), with Charlene, passing out project information.

As a bracelet was given to a child or adult, additional cards were given and the people were asked to pass them around. And we got responses. As I approached one group, the response was, “I already got one from that guy down there.”

Interesting false discovery: “Crosswalk safety is closely tied to the sting operating.” The reason for submitting the Mission Statement is to allow readers to know there is no connection, except that we all want to make our town a wonderful, safe place for our children (seniors and everyone in-between) to be raised.

Tedder also noted, when we first spoke, “It takes a community to raise a child.”

Crosswalk Safety
Mission Statement

“The safety of the school children crossing at the intersection of Redwood Hwy. at River Street is an issue of great concern. The goal of this project is to help secure a safer crosswalk at this intersection for the children in route to and from school.

“This mission is to bring awareness to the community concerning this hazardous situation; recruit volunteer crossing guards and conduct a training program for them.”
