ROTARY TOUCHDOWN - Rotary Club of the Illinois Valley has received a $1,262 Rotary District grant to aid the club in buying new football uniforms for Lorna Byrne Middle School, stated club President Karen Bodeving. “Our club was flabbergasted when we found out that students were stripping after a JV game and handing the sweaty uniforms to the varsity to immediately play in,” she said. “We felt this led to a serious health concern and were dumbfounded that such a thing would be happening in our community.” I.V. Rotary Club took this on as a project. “Our club has been in existence a little over a year,” Bodeving said. “In that time the active membership has grown. We recently funded about $27,000 to I.V. High School in conjunction with the three Grants Pass Rotary clubs’ help with our combined Duck Derby. We are working with the Boys & Girls Club to put on movie nights for Illinois Valley kids; have sponsored an exchange student from Brazil; are sending I.V. High School students to leadership camps; and we meet once a week to stay responsive to the Illinois Valley’s needs in moving our community forward.” Tuesday meetings begin at 12:15 p.m. in the Junction Inn’s Boswell Room.
KRINGLE JINGLE - Illinois Valley News will publish its annual Christmas section with children’s letters to Santa and original art work in its Dec. 17 issue. A Christmas bazaar will be held by Illinois Valley Grange 370 during the Dec. 6-7 weekend. Vendor and table information and reservations are available by phoning Ken Phillips at 592-4478 … Cave Junction Lions Club had a successful evening of Turkey Bingo on Saturday night, Nov. 8, as some 150 persons attended … A gypsy-like wagon drawn by four horses with one horse tied to the right side came through the valley late last week. Many people phoned the News or came to the office to advise us, and we appreciate that. But when we contacted the driver about a photo and some information, his brusque, unfriendly comment was: “Not a chance. I don’t do newspapers, I don’t do TV” … Newspaper slips: *Deer hunters are advised that the penalty for shooting fauns this season has been doubled. *Because of his wife behind bars, he has become philosophical and attained peace of mind. *A special feature of this home is the large garbage with a four-car capacity.
T-shirts: *I have a master’s in TV watching. *Cleverly disguised as an adult. *My shirt has words on it. *Every day, thousands of innocent plants are killed by vegetarians. Help end the violence.
LAST WORDS - *The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. When there is a gap between one’s real and one’s declared aims, one turns as it were instinctively to long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish spurting out ink. (George Orwell)
